Tracheostomy Care

What is it?

A surgical opening in your windpipe (trachea) to help you breathe, with a small tube inserted to keep the airway open.

Why do you have a tracheostomy?

This may be needed if your lungs need long-term support, you've had throat surgery, or you have a condition preventing normal breathing.

What to expect

• Daily cleaning around the stoma (opening)
• Cleaning of the inner tube
• Inspection for signs of infection or damage
• Regular tube maintenance
• Suctioning to remove secretions when needed

Important care

• Keep the area clean and dry
• Change the dressing regularly
• Protect the opening from water during baths
• Make sure the tube is secure
• Tell us immediately if you have trouble breathing, severe pain, or signs of infection

Potential concerns

• Coughing and secretions are normal
• Difficulty breathing needs immediate attention
• Tube blockage is an emergency
