Suctioning (Oral/Nasal/Tracheal)

What is it?

A procedure to safely remove secretions (fluids/mucus) from your airways using a gentle suction machine.

Why is this necessary?

Suctioning helps keep your airway clear so you can breathe easily and prevents secretions from causing infections like pneumonia.

What to expect

• A small flexible tube or catheter is used
• The suction is turned on and the tube is gently passed to the area that needs clearing
• You'll hear the suction sound and may feel slight pulling sensation
• The procedure lasts just a few seconds
• You may cough - this helps clear your airway

During suctioning

• Try to relax and breathe normally
• Coughing is normal and helpful
• The procedure is not painful but may feel uncomfortable

After suctioning

• You should feel like you can breathe better
• You might receive extra oxygen if prescribed
• Tell us if you feel short of breath
