Colostomy Care

What is it?

A surgical opening (stoma) in your abdomen that allows waste to bypass the colon and go into a pouch worn on your skin.

Why might you need a colostomy?

Colostomies are created when the colon, rectum, or part of the small intestine needs to be removed due to cancer, inflammatory disease, or injury.

What to expect

• Regular assessment of your stoma (opening)
• Cleaning the area gently with water
• Changing the collection pouch when needed
• Skin care around the stoma to prevent irritation
• Guidance on managing output and dietary considerations

Your responsibilities

• Learn to change your own pouch (we'll teach you)
• Maintain regular bowel routine
• Adjust diet as advised
• Monitor your stoma and skin health

Important notes

• The stoma should be pink/red and moist
• Contact us if it becomes pale, dark, or if bleeding occurs
• Leakage or skin irritation needs prompt attention
