IV Cannulation & Drip Management

What is it?

A small plastic tube (cannula) is inserted into a vein in your arm to give you fluids or medicines directly into the bloodstream.

Why do we need it?

An IV provides quick medication delivery when you cannot take medicines by mouth, or when you need fluids to stay hydrated, especially during illness or recovery.

What to expect

• A tourniquet (rubber band) around your upper arm
• Cleaning of your skin with antiseptic
• A quick insertion of the needle - slight pinch feeling
• The needle is removed, but the plastic tube stays in
• Your arm may feel uncomfortable or slightly tight at first
• We check the site regularly for any problems

How to prepare

• Keep your arm relaxed and still
• Let us know if you feel pain or notice swelling
• Don't bend your arm excessively

Important notes

• We change the insertion site every 3-4 days to prevent infection
• Tell us immediately if you notice redness, swelling, or warmth around the site
