Catheterisation (Urinary)

What is it?

A small flexible tube (catheter) placed through the urethra into the bladder to help drain urine when normal urination isn't possible.

Why might you need this?

Catheters are used when there's urinary retention (inability to empty bladder), during certain surgeries, or for immobile patients who cannot use the toilet.

What to expect

• Thorough cleaning and sterilization of the area
• Local anesthetic jelly applied (reduces discomfort)
• Gentle insertion of the catheter
• Urine drains into a collection bag
• The procedure typically takes 5-10 minutes

Important care

• Drink plenty of water to help flush your system
• Keep the catheter and tubing clean
• Keep the collection bag below your bladder level
• Avoid pulling on the catheter
• Tell us immediately if you have fever, pain, or foul-smelling urine

Duration

Catheters are typically temporary. We'll discuss when it can be removed safely.
