Nebulization

What is it?

A treatment that turns liquid medication into a fine mist you breathe in to reach your lungs directly.

Why do you need this?

Nebulization delivers respiratory medications (for asthma, COPD, etc.) directly to your airways where they work best to help you breathe.

What to expect

• 10-15 minutes of treatment
• You sit upright while the nebulizer runs
• You breathe normally through the mouthpiece or mask
• Medication creates a visible mist
• May taste medicine in mouth or feel soothing coolness
• Mild side effects (slight tremor, fast heartbeat) may occur

During treatment

• Breathe normally - don't rush
• If using a mouthpiece, seal your lips around it
• Take occasional deep breaths
• If needed, you can pause and rest

After treatment

• Rinse your mouth (especially if using steroids)
• You should breathe easier
• Tell us if you feel any unusual reactions
